Erin Mahone fell in love with performing before she could talk. As a child she found solace from a difficult family life in the magic of music and creating stories. Her siblings and cousins were often cast in her staged productions. And though Erin suffered from stage fright she rarely let that keep her from finding her way in front of an audience.
As an adolescent, teenager, and young adult Erin struggled with anxiety and depression yet somehow telling stories through theatre and music helped her cope with her daily struggles and those of the other members of her family who also faced the challenge of mental illness. Erin put college on hold for a few years and pursued the performing arts professionally in Richmond, Va and New York City. She continued to sing in bands and act in various touring companies, professional theaters, and local community productions. The decision to get married and have a family motivated Erin to finish school and ultimately set her on the path to It Runs in the Family. It was upon re-entering school and choosing the path of social and behavioral sciences with a double major in Psychology and Sociology that Erin decided it was her mission to bring that which she considers fundamental to the human condition to people of all ages and abilities. She worked in various capacities with under served populations to provide access to the arts and the opportunity to share their own truth through writing and performance.
Now as a, wife, mother of 3 amazing children, a mental health advocate, performing artist, and arts administrator Erin has come full circle. She continues to perform whenever the opportunity presents itself and has recently developed It Runs in the Family – this website and a Cabaret show of songs and stories about making sense of life’s challenges, family, finding our way, and breaking the stigma related to mental illness.
